Acceptable Sacrifice!
In my work as a volunteer for our state’s proLife political action committee, a PAC for short, I look at voting records, surveys and statements, but I also talk to candidates and legislators a lot.
I recently had a conversation with a legislator candidate seeking a higher office than previously held. Now, I know they have coaches, campaign managers, handlers or whatever one might call them, but I also know that they are people and people are usually true to themselves. I wanted to hear from this candidate about the specific circumstance of exceptions in a bill.
By exceptions, I mean that a piece of proposed legislation would prohibit abortion, for example, except for children conceived by rape or incest. The candidate told me of a 100% ProLife voting record and insisted that all ProLife legislation had those exceptions.
I assured the candidate that there had been legislation passed in other states that had no such exceptions. States like Michigan and Georgia had been able to pass protections for pre born children without making rape or incest conceived babies the acceptable sacrifices.
Today, I was asked if I would want legislators to vote against legislation that contained such language.
“If the bill pertained to a level of care for our elderly, except those deemed incompetent to make their own decisions, wouldn’t you?” I thought. In other words, care would be denied to those whom society no longer values as contributing to public productivity.
Would that be an acceptable sacrifice to you?
In a utilitarian society, only those contributing or those believed to have the future ability to contribute to the general productivity of the community are to be valued. That is not where I want to live.
I advocate for the protection of the Right to Life for all human beings, without exceptions for any classification or category.
In response to the question, I said, “It defies ProLife logic to vote for a bill that excludes a category of human beings.” It punches ProLife logic in the face.
There is either a baby worthy of our protection or there isn’t.
I spoke to a group of candidates a few weeks ago and I told them that the opposition, usually the abortion vendors will try to hit you in your emotions and pull you out of a logical, principled stand to a wavering, emotional argument.
They will hit hard with demands on your compassion for women who may have been assaulted and abused. We live in a very dangerous time. Assault is common. Abuse is common. Trauma and pain is too common. That is no reason to kill people. We don’t kill people for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Crisis pregnancy will happen. Let’s come up with legislation that protects and provides for the solutions to the problems associated with the crisis. Let’s protect women from abortion vendors and help them through the crisis with counseling, resources and protections from abusers. Let’s protect all human life without exception.
