Why We March for Life
The March for Life is a public witness to the fact that people care about the right to life for all human beings, regardless of age, size, location, environment, degree of dependency. It started because restrictive abortion laws were no longer being enforced and the Supreme Court decided that preborn babies did not qualify for the protections of personhood under the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution.
That single assault on humanity has cost the lives, futures, and families of millions upon millions. Estimates in the US are around 60,000,000. Sixty million people are not here because of the legalization that followed. Those people where brutally murdered by abortion vendors, making huge profits and destroying the lives of the living, in many cases.
If we tried extrapolate the cost to society, it would be unattainable, unfathomable. Some of those people would bring sweet joy to others. Some would bring beautiful music, art, and literature. Some would bring innovation to solve problems and make life better for everyone on earth. Some would lead us to great works and magnificent accomplishments. Some would work diligently, pay taxes, contribute stability, and strengthen families. Some would teach the value of life. Some would have prevented child abuse. Some would have found cures for disease, preventing drug abuse. Some would have brought us to a loving relationship with God.
I firmly believe that last statement is the reason for abortion. According to Scripture, God wants a relationship with every person created. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Jn 3:16 Evil on the earth is from the devil. Abortion is pure evil. People have been deceived into abortion, infanticide, and genocide in an attempt to create their own idea of what perfect is throughout all of time. The perfect body… The perfect career… The perfect lifestyle… Even the perfect race… We are all humans. We are the perfect race, no matter what our ethnicity.
Deception is the whole key to keeping abortion legal and killing millions around the world every year. Some people know the truth, but most are deceived into thinking that abortion should be available in hard cases. Others think the abortion vendors are trying to help people.
I didn’t go the the largest March for Life for years because it seemed like a big party. Our NH March for Life was a memorial. That is most appropriate. In DC, hundreds of thousands of people go. There is an energy of expectancy in the air. There are so many young people. They want to show solidarity to their own siblings, would-be classmates, coworkers, and friends that were killed by abortion. They also want to get charged for the rest of the year. They want to be plugged in. The are compelled to to change the hearts and minds of those within their own sphere if influence. They desire to be equipped for local action.
I went to the March for Life in DC this year. It is commercial. Vendors and groups selling T-shirts, buttons, books, trinkets of all kinds filled the Expo center of one of the largest hotels in the middle of the city. The vendors are hoping to make resources available to share the message that life is valuable and should be protected from the earliest stages of development. That’s important.
Many of the resources spur conversation, which leads to changed minds or better yet, finding actual help for crisis pregnancy rather that destroying the most vulnerable people on earth. I met some of the most articulate and passionate young people there. I was breathless on occasion to listen to them. A few were involved in weekly or monthly outreaches at the very gates of the abortion vendors. Some call it the gates of hell. Women and young girls often go in thinking their lives will be easier with their problem solved. They come out in pain. Their pain often leads to major depression, suicidal ideology or attempts, drug and alcohol abuse, and a multitude of physical and emotional problems that plague them for the rest of their lives.
Why do we march? Why did so many risk the dangers of the storm, Jonas, this year? It is, as the name of the storm means, 1. to be as a dove, a peaceful being, 2. a sign from God, 3. accomplishing, 4. destroyer, 5. of him who oppresses.
Isn’t it strange that we can string the meanings of the name together to exemplify the work of the March for Life 2016?
